Garden gnomes, small, playful little humanoid figures with pointed hats and colorful costumes, have been one of gardeners’ favorite ornamental objects since the early 19th century. They were first introduced in Germany over two centuries ago as figurines of helpful little dwarfs who were believed to tend to the garden during night. Since then, garden gnomes have been objects that add color and amusement to one’s garden or lawn.
Garden gnomes can be made in many materials, including terra cotta, clay, and resins. A recent addition is the manufacture of plastic garden gnomes, which have gained popularity since the 1960s. These are very much cheaper to produce than their traditional clay counterparts. Clay or terra cotta gnomes require long durations of time for molding, setting in of the clay, and painting, whereas plastic garden gnomes are mass produced in factories that put together colored parts, and hence fabricate the gnomes much quicker. They are thus also lighter on the purchaser’s pocket. While traditional clay gnomes would cost anywhere between $20 to over a $100 depending on their size and the quality of material used, plastic garden gnomes do not usually cost more than $10-$20. They are therefore easier for a larger consumer audience to acquire.
Plastic garden gnomes can be modeled in a wide variety of poses. Some may be made into cute and funny little creatures and some as dwarfs that look snobbish and full of attitude. Some pose in funny positions, some are lying down or reclining, some are just weeding or mowing the lawn, and some may be running after an imaginary butterfly. Gnomes can be made to look “old-world”, like the traditional clay poses of sitting, looking at the sky, or working the garden. They can also be made modern and funky, for example in poses that depict dancing as a rap artist, or as a trendy fashion freak.
Plastic garden gnomes add that touch of magical amusement to your garden that perfectly complements your assortment of floral arrangements or climbers. They can be placed at the entrance to your garden or lawn, or near a bench, on sidewalks or pavements, on steps, or near plants to create focal points within the landscape. They add character and liveliness to the garden, giving it a brighter, more amiable and more hospitable feel.
Although plastic garden gnomes are ever popular because of their low prices and the variety of designs and colors, traditional clay gnomes have started making a comeback into many home gardens across America. This is because they are hand crafted, giving a more realistic appearance to the figurines, rather like human sculptures.
